Good-bye blog

After seven years I have decided to make the switch over to Tumblr. It's been a great experience blogging here but I feel like a need a fresh start and I feel my art has needed one too. If anyone would like to visit me over at my new art blog the link is below. It will be more of the same, just hopefully better and more frequent. Thank you to everyone who has visited my blog over the years.

The end.

September - May

I like to look back at old sketchbooks and see how much I have improved/ learned over time. I like to take the same sketch and re-draw it to see how I would do it differently now. So in January I went back to September's sketchbook and re-drew a few sketches. Today (in May) I went back and drew them a third time. It's pretty cool to see them all together and see how I have (in my opinion) improved a ton. I have to admit that the earlier sketches make me feel embarrassed. I obviously needed more practice, so I have spent the last few months filling up sketchbooks full of heads since I really wanted to get more comfortable with drawing them. It's really helped me and it's neat to see how my style is forming.

how does your garden grow

I volunteered to paint the backdrops for my daughter's kindergarten play. It's super fun to work on and I can't wait to see it all put together.

good morning

I intended to do this for last week's Illustration Friday topic ruckus, but I didn't finish it in time. No worries because it still works with this weeks theme of outside. Done in gouache, colored pencil and digital

it's a small world

I've been going through an "it's a small world" phase. Mary Blair's designs are so awesome. This kind of stemmed from that. Also, a few days ago I got some Col-Erase pencils and I love them. How have I not used them before? I love them for the cool colors (violet!) but mostly because they don't smudge all over my hand which always happens when I'm sketching.

catwoman

I am really loving this idea of taking my paintings, scanning them in and playing with them in Photoshop. I like having the texture of the actual painting working with some of the Photoshop effects. For some reason it is so much easier to add highlights, or darken shadow areas on the computer than with my gouache. It feels a little like cheating since I have been an advocate of traditionally done illustrations for so long though.

Happy Spring

Happy first day of Spring everybody! I spent the last two days digging up earth for a new patio in our backyard. Many good worms were lost. I'm sorry little friends, this one is for you.
This time I added a little more color on top of my painting using Photoshop to brighten things up. I really like how it worked and I plan on using this technique more when needed. I put both up for comparison. The top one is the one I tweaked in Photoshop.

Two posts in one day. Go me!

Practicing some more with the colored pencils and gouache. I'm really liking the textures it makes.

painting

I spent today playing around with some different painting techniques. These were fun and simple to do and I want to play around with it some more. I started all these with a light grey underpainting in gouache. Then I applied colored pencil only to the shadow areas to give them some color and richness, followed by transparent layers of gouache on top. I added more colored pencil and/or gouache until I was happy with the contrasts between light and dark. I really tried to focus on working fast and not overworking the brush strokes.

Girly

I took a bit of a hiatus from art during Christmas, but I'm back into it and loving it. I made this cute girly because I am still trying to work out my new technique of mixed media.
